A note from Ella's workshop

Your Copper Will Last a Lifetime. Here's How.

It darkens. It deepens. It becomes yours.

Pure copper is a living material. Over time, it develops a patina — a dark, rich finish that forms as the copper reacts with your skin, your oils, and your daily life. This isn’t damage. It’s character. The craftspeople in Calama call it the memory of the metal.

“I wore mine for two years before I ever cleaned it. The patina told more about my life than any photograph. That’s real copper — it becomes yours.”

How to clean your copper

01

Lemon & Salt

For a quick refresh. Cut a lemon in half, dip it in coarse salt, and rub gently over the surface. The citric acid dissolves oxidation in 30–60 seconds. Rinse immediately under cool water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

02

White Vinegar & Salt

For heavier tarnish. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water with a teaspoon of salt. Soak for 15–30 minutes, then rinse and dry immediately. Do not leave soaking overnight — this can pit the surface.

03

Baking Soda & Lemon

The gentlest option, ideal for detailed pieces. Make a paste with baking soda and fresh lemon juice. Apply with a soft cloth, leave for 1–2 minutes, then rinse and dry. Avoid abrasive scrubbing.

The Secret

Just wear it.

The most natural polish for copper is daily contact with skin. Your natural oils slowly brighten the surface, prevent deep oxidation, and create an even, warm glow. Copper worn every day rarely needs cleaning — the metal takes care of itself.

What to keep away from your copper

These will accelerate tarnish or cause surface damage:

  • Chlorine and chlorinated pools
  • Saltwater and sea spray
  • Harsh soaps and antibacterial gels
  • Perfume and hairspray
  • Chemical jewellery cleaners
  • Ultrasonic cleaning machines
  • Bleach or ammonia-based products
  • Toothpaste (too abrasive)
  • Prolonged direct sunlight when stored

About the green mark

If you notice a faint green tint on your skin, don’t worry — this is completely normal and harmless. It’s copper oxide, formed when the metal reacts with moisture and skin acids. It washes off immediately with soap and water.

In fact, it’s a reliable sign that your piece is genuine copper — not plated, not blended. Just pure.

Storing your copper

When you’re not wearing it:

  • Keep it in the dry cloth pouch included with your order
  • Use a small zip-lock or airtight bag if storing for longer
  • Avoid humid areas — never store in a bathroom
  • Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight
  • Store separately from other metals to prevent contact marks
